And in Alden-Conger School District…
December 15th, 2021

Saw this headline, “Alden-Conger teacher’s teaching material causing controversy,” in the Albert Lea Tribune, and what struck me first is the bizarre headline that “teaching materials” were causing controversy! Ummmmm, no. So I fired off a missive to the editor, and then the School Board — you can too — you should too:
merkkila@ac242.us, jguanella@ac242.us, bkorman@ac242.us, tlinn@ac242.us, amarschalk@ac242.us, cschmidt@ac242.us, dsteele@ac242.us
Here’s the article on Yahoo, via Albert Lea Tribune:
Alden-Conger teacher’s teaching material causing controversy
The board room was filled to capacity with several audience members standing in the hallway.
“The sky’s the limit when it comes to my children,” she said.
Paige Diekmann said she is a student in Hughes’ class for literature.
She said her family took a moment to discuss the poems, along with their take on them as a family.
She said the organization has heard concerns of similar incidents happening all over the state.
The school board did not address the issue during the meeting.
“The school district is investigating this complaint,” he said.
An email to Hughes on Tuesday has not been returned.

I’ve sent a missive to all the School Board members; Jenny Hughes, the teacher being challenged; to the school generally; and this Letter to the Editor:
Education should prepare children for the world
I’ve learned there’s an issue in the Alden-Conger School District. Having worked on a project in the area, I get daily updates from Albert Lea Tribune, and was struck by the headline, “Alden-Conger teacher’s teaching material causing controversy” because teaching material doesn’t CAUSE a controversy. People do. People objecting to teaching material do.
I wish people would get as worked up as this over the many cases of child sexual abuse and concern for the many children who experience sexual abuse, and wish that they would work to help them deal with experiences, ward off and report abuse that we know is happening to children. I wish people would get as worked up as this over the many instances of homophobic outing, rage and fear, and concern for the many children who experience that rage and fear, who turn it inward on themselves, and wish people were as active in helping young gay children understand sexual orientation, to ward off and report abuse that we know is directed toward gay children.
Perhaps ask those objecting so fiercely whether they’ve experienced child sexual abuse and/or homophobia; ask them about children in their circle who have been sexually abused, who are gay; and ask them what they’ve done to help and protect children subjected to sexual abuse and homophobia.
We need to focus on assuring “education” prepares children for the world. Hiding, lashing out, denial, and restricting “teaching materials” does just the opposite.

And Xcel spreads info to RW City Council
December 14th, 2021

Xcel Energy signed up for time before the Red Wing City Council at last night’s meeting. The entirety of their packet is here:
Xcel started off their part of the meeting with… well… this powerpoint:
And in that 7C Attachment was Xcel Energy’s “responses” to questions posed by the City in its Scoping Comments for the Supplemental EIS, which they did not go over!! Dig this:
Note this admission that Xcel has no intention of “REPLACING” the TN-40 casks with its yet to be identified new cask. First, regarding their failure to ID the cask, they state that they selected the TN-40s in 1989, SIX YEARS prior to the first loading of a dry cask! They don’t answer question #1 — UNRESPONSIVE!

So do you mean to say, Xcel, that though “TN-40s were selected in 1989,” SIX YEARS BEFORE THEY WERE FIRST LOADED, that you cannot identify at this time what cask you are proposing to use? Right…
Now, as to replacing the existing, loaded, TN-40 casks, here’s what Xcel has to say:

Has spent fuel ever been removed from a TN-40 and put into another cask?

Xcel Energy’s presentation starts right about here, at 23:25. Note that at he says that RW’s Comments were on the SEIS, but no, they were SCOPING comments (25:54):
Xcel’s Kapitz says that he was in charge of the initial Dry Cask Storage ISFSI (was he also in charge of the Florence Township ISFSI application to state and NRC?).
Note at 31:14, “ONE of your residents has a concern” that there’s a state law that PUC shall order casks. FYI, it’s not just moi! I’m honored, but… just NO!
Xcel’s Kapitz also misstates, misrepresents, the point of the statute. Let’s be clear here — the point of Minn. Stat. 116C.776 was as one point of assurance that the ISFSI was not PERMANENT! 1994 was 27 years ago…
My comments on nuclear waste (and then the resignation of our 2nd Ward Councilcritter) start at about 50:06:
I’ll need to post this 7C Attachment on the Public Utilities Commission site for public viewing!
“Storm the City” lite in Red Wing
December 14th, 2021

Will someone please explain to Mike Montgomery that the U.S. is not a theocracy? He read from Romans 13:1, but read what it really says!

Here’s a longer version, note the part about TAXES! SNORT!

Montgomery is orchestrating residents to show up and “give their comment time” to him, so that he can rant and blather and spew ugliness in Dog’s name. That starts at about 54 minutes. Check out George Snyder at about 57:40, and Ernie Stone had some interesting things to say too (Hey, Ernie, SNOUT’S OUT!), starting about 1:00:30, particularly admitting that the reason for the “Recall City Hall” was the firing of former Chief Pohlman. Mike Montgomery starts about 1:07. Note he brings a group…
Must watch to believe…

Here it is, you have to read the whole thing:

Xcel ‘fesses up — no intent to unload TN-40s
December 9th, 2021

Xcel Energy is presenting at the Red Wing City Council meeting on Monday. Here’s the presentation:
The interesting part is in the company’s response to the City of Red Wing comment to the PUC, pages 30-36 of Attachment 7C. And it’s p. 33 that is really interesting. Xcel confesses that they have no intention of unloading the existing TN-40s and putting that waste in the new casks!

Oh, really?

Have you forgotten the statute, or do you think we will forget?
Here’s the state’s law that requires the Commission to order casks usable for transportation so the nuclear waste can be shipped out of here:

Better make sure the Public Utilities Commissioners aren’t sleeping at the switch.
