Terrorism and the “Climate of Hate”

White Terrorism from Prof. Juan Cole, University of Michigan:
From Spotty…
Singing Kum Bah Yah, off key
And from Paul Krugman:
Climate of Hate
By PAUL KRUGMAN/The New York TimesPut me in the latter category. I’ve had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach ever since the final stages of the 2008 campaign. I remembered the upsurge in political hatred after Bill Clinton’s election in 1992 — an upsurge that culminated in the Oklahoma City bombing. And you could see, just by watching the crowds at McCain-Palin rallies, that it was ready to happen again. The Department of Homeland Security reached the same conclusion: in April 2009 an internal report warned that right-wing extremism was on the rise, with a growing potential for violence.

Fighting words?
January 9th, 2011
Gabriella Giffords shot yesterday…
All the hate speech, hit lists, vitriol… from Palin, the Tea Party, radio “personalities,” … how about some responsibility for these “fighting words” unleashed on susceptible ingoramuses? (ignorami?) There’s a reason they’re called “fighting words” and there’s a reason “fighting words” are not constitutionally protected free speech…
“Possible” factor? I haven’t forgotten that Wellstone was #1 on the Bush/Rove “hit list” or that the NRA targeted Minnesota candidates in mailers and labeled them “dead.”
HERC at it again
January 9th, 2011
And for some “big picture” emissions info, here’s the latest Toxic Release Inventory from the EPA:
Hennepin County and the MPCA have released their “Environmental Assessment Worksheet” for the HERC burner, together with supporting documents. Check ’em out:
As you read through them, note the dates… some of it goes back to 2009, some 2008 and some 2006!
There will be a public comment period and a public meeting following publication in the EQB Monitor. Here’s the EQB Monitor site to check, it’s not there yet…
For more info, keep an eye on the Neighbors Against the Burner site.

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER: CHICAGO STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Chicago Cultural Center
78 E. Washington St, Michigan Avenue Galleries
Chicago IL 60602
Vivian Maier was a nanny in the Chicago area who spent her time off with a camera…
… a slight understatement…
… and after she died last year, in her 80s, boxes and boxes of hundreds of thousands of negatives were discovered…
… and boxes of undeveloped rolls of film.
Next week, an exhibition opens at the Chicago Cultural Center, running until early April.
