Underground DC transmission in the Midwest?
March 12th, 2019
This is the “route map” from SOO Green site, used in PR
Announced just now in a major PR push, because Siemens bought it (see below), yet another transmission project, 500+ kV, and it’s supposedly a DC option to be buried underground along rail lines. Look at the map, provided in the Press Release I guess, because most of the articles use it… check the yellow “SOO Green Available Route” in Minnesota!
Developer proposes a 350-mile underground transmission line to carry wind energy from rural Iowa to Chicago
Now that’s different!
But it’s been a concept looking for a home for quite a while (and check the FERC Orders and dockets below):
And major PR push? It’s because Siemens just bought the idea:
Siemens Buys Transmission Line to Take Iowa Wind to the Eastern Grid
A July 2018 presentation:
From “Midwest Reliability Organization” at their Fall 2018 meeting, and the map from that presentation:
SOO Green Renewable Rail – A Wind Energy Delivery Project – Joseph DeVito
Yet they used the green map for PR. Why? Something else interesting in that presentation is the “Development Team.”
Now look at the yellow “Soo Green Available Route” from MN to IL, and look at the green “Soo Green Primary Route” and guess what is right in the middle between them, why it’s “Cardinal-Hickory Creek” MVP 5 (southern part):
Note that Fredricksen & Byron law firm is involved in both Cardinal-Hickory Creek and SOO Green.
Here are just a few of the articles this week:
Proposed underground power line could bring Iowa wind turbine electricity to Chicago
Renewable energy rail project would run from Mason City to Chicago
Proposed new transmission project would deliver renewables between PJM and MISO
Proposed Area Power Generation to Go to Chicago
Just google, and you’ll find so many more.
MISO wins approval for new rules to link up external transmission
But what do we need more transmission for? We’ve got significant overbuild as it is. One big benefit is that user pays, where with much of the pass-through transmission of CapX 2020 and the MISO MVP 17 project portfolio, the pass-through ratepayers are stuck with a percentage of the full cost of all the projects.
There have been related FERC dockets, most recently the October 12, 2018 Order – Tariff Revision in docket ER-18-1410-000 (also -001):
There’s also an Order on Proposal and Guidance in ER-16-675:
To look at the entire FERC docket, GO HERE and search!
It’s something more to monitor. Here’s the developer’s site:
Note that Joe DeVito is heading up Fresh Energy these days, also on Board of Wind on the Wires/whatever new name is.
Need more info. Interesting concept that addresses some of the huge issues, but need, always need, or lack thereof.
The earth asks enviros: What have you done for me lately?

You seem to think you’re Dog’s gift to this earth…
Two things appeared in the inbox at about the same time, the first an announcement of McKnight Foundation and Energy Foundation grants in the Midwest, and from Truthout, a review and interview of Ozzie Zehner, author of Green Illusions: The Dirty Secrets of Clean Energy and the Future of Environmentalism.
First, the massive foundation to “environmental” organizations:
McKnight fights climate change with $25 million in grants
The two-year grants of $20 million to Energy Foundation and $5 million to RE-AMP, a network of nonprofits, extend existing funding partnerships and the philanthropy’s $100 million commitment, announced in 2008, to blunt climate change. The two groups will focus on developing policies and public education to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio.
And on to Green Illusions: The Dirty Secrets of Clean Energy and the Future of Environmentalism. GO HERE TO ORDER.
That pretty much sums up what I’ve seen over the last 20 years…
…the binary aspect, and looking for a simple “flick the switch” solution when it’s oh-so-complicated.
Climate Change @ Mayflower Church
March 15th, 2013
The rain has just turned to snow, the mess is heading south… at the “Environmental Congress” right now, and Gov. Dayton must be here because there’s a big police presence… well, for Bloomington, that is.
Last night was “Getting Real About Climate Change” at Mayflower Church, part of the 2013 League of Women Voters Minneapolis Health Legacy Forum. It was very well attended, though heavy in the silver-haired crowd.
I grew up at Mayflower, that’s where I learned about the importance of participation and a sense of stewardship, some responsibility for this world and conditions of life in it. My parents were both very involved for over 50 years, and I called the organizers of this event, and emailed too, about getting a booth. The organizer left a message, I called back, we had a positive chat, and explained some about who I am and what I do, Legalectric and No CapX 2020, and it was no problem, asked about cost and there was none, and I got to drafting handouts, getting a poster printed. Got there and, well, funny how that works… the bottom line was that I was told that someone talked to someone and suddenly I was not welcome, amid a couple rounds of caning and assumptions, and though the source was not identified, this is not rocket science…
Well, Rev. Sarah Campbell was indeed welcoming, it was good to see her again, a joy as always. I can see why my mother thought so much of her.
And never mind the LWV bottom line — we had a table in the van and got set up right inside the dining room door. Handed out more than a few flyers, 200 minus about 6 left over of my Grist piece:
Transmission Lies – published in Grist 2/3/2009
Minnesota land is being taken by Xcel and landowners pay the price
And while we’re talking about “getting real about climate change,” what is it going to take to tie the Renewable Energy Standard to closing down coal plants? As of now, there’s no connection, and the RES has zip, squat, to do with production of CO2. Second, now that through CapX 2020 transmission we’re locked into 50 years of central station coal, how will anything have an impact? Since we’ve given them access to market, why would they shut down those big existing coal plants?
Issues to be raised upstairs at the break out session. Back to it… almost LIVE from the Ramada in Bloomington:
Bill Clinton toadying for transmission
December 13th, 2012
In Chicago, Bill Clinton calls for national grid to boost renewable energy.
Yes, it’s all connected…There goes Clinton promoting transmission that enables coal.
We all know Bill Clinton has his warts:
But did you know that yesterday Clinton exhibited a major outbreak of warts as a transmission toady for Obama?
And we all know Obama loves transmission and declared seven transmission projects for “accelerated permitting and construction” including two of “my” projects, the PSEG Susquehanna-Roseland line and Xcel’s CapX 2020 Hampton-Rochester-LaCrosse line. I’ve posted a few times about this:
Obama “fast tracks” transmission?!?!?!
Obama’s Transmission BS in the News
What does Obama’s Xmsn push mean?
Here’s the plan in the Midwest — check out the blue solid lines and dashed lines:
… and it gets worse:
These JCSP lines are in the MTEP 11 Appendices, 765kV lines across the Midwest:
But do you know the level of toadyism and sell-out of so called “environmental” groups that made this transmission build-out possible? Transmission is just one of the legacies of the Izaak Walton League (and its program “Wind on the Wires”), Fresh Energy, Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, and North American Water Office. There’s also coal gasification, burning turkey shit, and rolling for nuclear power in a deal to stick nuclear waste in Florence Township and taking the money for compensation of the Prairie Island Indian Community and shift that into the Renewable Energy Development Fund, Community Based Energy Development (C-BED) legislation that gave House Speaker Steve Sviggum a turbine and substation on his land in the first C-BED project applied for (and thankfully failed). Gee, thanks for all of this and more from Minnesota’s “environmental” organizations over the years… the 1994 Prairie Island deal, the 2002 Transmission deal, the 2003 Prairie Island deal… it makes me ill. Who do they think they are to make these deals, who are they representing? Not the people! Not the public interest!
Here’s some primary documentation:

Presentations at IEDC (Legalectric – posted February 16th, 2007)
IEDC gets carried away (Legalectric – posted February 15th, 2007)
You might think this is old news, but it’s not, it’s got an impact right now, an impact felt by the thousands of landowners whose land is being condemned right now for CapX 2020 transmission routed over their land. Why? Well, just after Mark Dayton won the election in 2010, the Waltons and Wind on the Wires did a spin off (note their numbers don’t match), separating the two, that’s just after the election, and just before Gov. Mark Dayton announced the Walton’s Bill Grant would be the new Deputy Commissioner of Dept. of Commerce in charge of Energy Facilities Permitting.
And “Wind on the Wires” IRS 990s:
Wind on the Wires 2009 IRS Form 990 (signed 11-12-10, a week after the election)
Wind on the Wires 2010 IRS Form 990 (signed 11-14-2011)
How could anyone be more unsuitable for a position heading the state Energy Facilities Permitting department at Commerce?
Here’s the article in its entirety for posterity — from Midwest Energy News, brought to us by (buy) RE-AMP!
